Punctuated with numerous historical images of the early days.

There is much more than meets the eye in La Jolla, and by the end of the tour, you will have a newfound familiarity and appreciation of our little coastal hamlet.

We cover approximately 4 miles and walk a total of about 100 stairs. The route traverses the heart of the village and the highlights of the coast.

Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is considered one of the most unique veterans memorials in America. The only memorial that honors veterans, living or deceased, from the revolutionary war to the current war on terror, with an image of the veteran.

Visiting Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial commemorates the sacrifices made not only by servicemembers but also by the people who have kept Mt. Soledad Memorial operating. Our volunteers and ever generous donators are another reason the memorial has continued to operate.

Mount Soledad, also known as Soledad Mountain, is a prominent landmark in the city of San Diego, California, United States. The mountaintop is the site of the Mount Soledad Cross, the subject of a 25-year controversy over the involvement of religion in government which concluded in 2016.

We hope to see you at the Veterans Memorial!

Torrey Pines Golf Course host of the 2021 US Open and annual Farmer’s Open,  sits on the coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and is recognized as the premier municipal golf course owned and operated by a city. It is named after the Torrey Pine, a rare tree that grows in the wild only along this local stretch of the coastline in San Diego County and on Santa Rosa Island.

It is surely the most accessible public facility for the die-hard enthusiast wishing to play at a world-renown facility that nearly all golfers know by name. The La Jolla Historical Society is a destination for history and architecture lovers, alike. Housed in Wisteria Cottage, a fine example of vernacular architecture of early La Jolla, the Society serves as a popular resource and gathering place where residents and visitors explore history, art, ideas, and culture. Over the years, the simple structure has served as a guest house, a school, and a bookstore, with additions by Master Architect, Irving Gill. The surrounding garden terraces with cobblestone walls feature the newly installed Venturi Pergola and Garden. The interior of the former house has been adaptively reused for exhibition space. It will feature Tangible Memories: Recollections of La Jolla Pioneer Women, a show about the life and history of early 20th-century women, artistically interpreted by female contemporary artists.

The La Jolla Open Aire Market is different than other farmers markets in that all proceeds benefit La Jolla Elementary (LJES), a public school. The proceeds from the market fund various initiatives enjoyed by all children at LJES, including school improvements and programs such as art, music, library, technology and additional classroom teachers to lower class sizes.

The first market was held on October 25, 1998 with 14 farmers and one artisan. The market has continued to grow and in addition to helping the children, the market has become a vibrant weekly community event and gathering place for the entire La Jolla community with over 120 vendors every Sunday, 22 years and counting….

The market would not be possible without the amazing support of the district and Friends of LJES foundation volunteers.

So thank you for supporting our market, and supporting our kids!

Comprised of La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Canyons, Scripps Park, La Jolla Cove, and La Jolla Caves, the park is split into two sections: the Ecological Reserve and Marine Life Refuge. The Children’s Pool is a small beach partially protected by a seawall. The original intention was to create a fully protected swimming area, but in recent years and has filled in much of the area inside the wall.

This is a popular beach for scuba divers because of the reefs just offshore. These same reefs can create very strong currents and other hazards, particularly in high surf conditions.

This has also become a popular viewing area for harbor seals.  Seals and occasionally seal lions haul out on the beach to rest year-round.  The Children’s Pool Beach is closed to public access during harbor seal pupping season, Dec. 15 through May 15, yearly.

This is a very picturesque beach with a panoramic view. Several small beaches are nearby including Wipeout Beach to the south and Shell Beach to the north.

Children’s Pool is one of nine beaches that has a permanent lifeguard station patrolled by San Diego Lifeguards.

Children’s pool is an excellent place to bring children to enjoy the water that is partially surrounded by the Children’s Pool seawall. This is also a perfect place to go and see the famous La Jolla seals. A rope barrier separates the seals from people coming to see them, keeping both the children and seals safe. You can still get a perfect view of the seals and take amazing pictures while watching the seals relax and play on the beach!

This tunnel was dug out by two Chinese laborers hired by German artist, mining engineer, and entrepreneur Gustav Schultz in 1902. It leads from the Cave Store, Schultz’s original residence, down through the sandstone cliffs of La Jolla Cove and into Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave.

Tours are approximately 15-20 minutes long and self-guided. You’ll have the entire tunnel and sea cave for yourself and your party (unless you come on one of our ‘walk-in’ days)! Come prepared to both descend and climb the original 144 stairs (roughly a five-minute ascent at a gentle pace). Experience a real piece of San Diego history at the Cave Store.

To get there: Walk a few minutes north on Coast Boulevard to The Cave Store. Inside this souvenir shop awaits the entrance to the only sea cave accessible by land, Sunny Jim sea cave. It’s a sometimes-slippery walk down the staircase into the cave, so be mindful of small children. Once inside, it’s fun to hear the echo of the ocean and occasional sea lion. A small admission fee is required.

Along the way to The Cave Store, you’ll pass Clam’s Cave, another of La Jolla’s seven sea caves, which is the only sea cave in California that you can see from land. There is no need to plan a ton of time for this side adventure, maybe 30 minutes, including the walk from La Jolla Cove and it’s not necessary if you are short on time.

La Jolla Cove is San Diego’s most desirable spot for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

The water is calm and ecologically protected, providing a safe home for colorful garibaldi, yellowtail, rays and even leopard sharks. Because the water is protected, surfboards, boogie boards and other floatation devices are not permitted. The beach itself is small, but nearby Scripps Park offers a nice grassy expanse for spreading out. Parking is available in nearby paid lots, with a few street spots available for the lucky.
