Torrey Pines Golf Course host of the 2021 US Open and annual Farmer’s Open,  sits on the coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and is recognized as the premier municipal golf course owned and operated by a city. It is named after the Torrey Pine, a rare tree that grows in the wild only along this local stretch of the coastline in San Diego County and on Santa Rosa Island.

It is surely the most accessible public facility for the die-hard enthusiast wishing to play at a world-renown facility that nearly all golfers know by name. Torrey Pines also offers one of the largest on-course golf shops in the United States, expert instruction, tournaments, and advanced golf schools.

Set out for marine adventure. Spanning 6,000 acres across the ocean floor in San Diego, this aquatic playground and marine life preserve is a popular destination for kayakers, snorkelers, swimmers, and scuba divers alike. Comprised of La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Canyons, Scripps Park, La Jolla Cove, and La Jolla Caves, the park is split into two sections: the Ecological Reserve and Marine Life Refuge. The Ecological Reserve zone has the most special protections, including a ban on all fishing and surfing in order to help maintain and protect the many sea creatures, sea lions, and seals that call this area home.

The Children’s Pool is a small beach partially protected by a seawall. The original intention was to create a fully protected swimming area, but in recent years and has filled in much of the area inside the wall.

This is a popular beach for scuba divers because of the reefs just offshore. These same reefs can create very strong currents and other hazards, particularly in high surf conditions.

This has also become a popular viewing area for harbor seals.  Seals and occasionally seal lions haul out on the beach to rest year-round.  The Children’s Pool Beach is closed to public access during harbor seal pupping season, Dec. 15 through May 15, yearly.

This is a very picturesque beach with a panoramic view. Several small beaches are nearby including Wipeout Beach to the south and Shell Beach to the north.

Children’s Pool is one of nine beaches that has a permanent lifeguard station patrolled by San Diego Lifeguards.

Children’s pool is an excellent place to bring children to enjoy the water that is partially surrounded by the Children’s Pool seawall. This is also a perfect place to go and see the famous La Jolla seals. A rope barrier separates the seals from people coming to see them, keeping both the children and seals safe. You can still get a perfect view of the seals and take amazing pictures while watching the seals relax and play on the beach!

La Jolla Cove is San Diego’s most desirable spot for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

The water is calm and ecologically protected, providing a safe home for colorful garibaldi, yellowtail, rays and even leopard sharks. Because the water is protected, surfboards, boogie boards and other floatation devices are not permitted. The beach itself is small, but nearby Scripps Park offers a nice grassy expanse for spreading out. Parking is available in nearby paid lots, with a few street spots available for the lucky.

Underwater reefs and jutting rocks create fierce waves at Windansea.

You’re more likely to find experienced surfers than families with small children. The secluded, breathtaking scenery attracts admirers as well, particularly the romantic type. The historic and often photographed surf shack on the beach makes a popular backdrop for wedding photos and richly colored sunset shots. Located at the end of Nautilus Street, with a small parking lot as well as street parking.

The La Jolla Coast Walk Trail runs from La Jolla Shores beach to La Jolla Cove.

It is easy and quite scenic. Park along Coast Blvd. The trailhead for this hike is just north to the left of the Cave Store. If you prefer to head south, follow the sidewalk that wraps around Kellogg Park and head towards the Children’s Pool, which, despite its name, is not a blue chlorine-filled rectangle but gorgeous secluded beach. Keep an eye in the ocean for harbor seals!

Beautiful and isolated, Black’s is located north of Scripps Pier, beneath the Torrey Pines Gliderport and close to UCSD. Access it by walking from Shores or descending the rough cliff path from above. The north portion of Black’s is clothing-optional, where nudists bask in the sun and play volleyball without bathing suits.

In general, dogs are not allowed on beaches during the day. Alcohol, smoking and beach fires are not permitted. No overnight camping. Please check each beach’s posted rules.

Originally conceived as a protected swimming area for children, the sea-walled cove began to fill with sand and eventually, harbor seals. There is still ongoing debate over who is more entitled to this spot—children or the seals—but it does not diminish its appeal to tourists and locals. It’s a great place to take a photo. Free parking along Coast Blvd, accessible from nearby paid lots as well.

Lace up your shoes, pack some sunscreen and drinking water, and be sure to bring your camera.

Many easy hikes under 2 miles (Razor Point, Yucca Point, Guy Fleming Trail, Parry Grove) will take about an hour to explore and offer simply breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean all year long. Beach Trail and Broken Trail are hikes with beach access and will deposit you down to the sands of cliff-lined Black’s Beach. The hiking trails are lined with gorgeous sandstone, succulents and springtime wildflowers. As you are traversing your way along, keep a close watch on the horizon where you may be lucky enough to spot gray whales or bottle-nosed dolphins splashing in the water.
