Fu was born in Santa Monica, California. She received her MFA from CalArts, MA in art history/museum studies from University of Southern California, and BA from Stanford University. She attended the Whitney Independent Study Program and was in residence at Skowhegan. Fu has received grants from Art Matters, Rema Hort Mann Foundation, and Harpo Foundation and is a Guggenheim Fellow. Her artwork is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Pérez Art Museum, Miami, Florida; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts ; and Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. She lives and works in San Diego, California, where she is Associate Professor of Art at the University of San Diego.

Mural Members and Makers attend FREE and will receive an email to RSVP for the lecture.

The lecture will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for this event. Your name will be on an attendee list at the front door. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Seating is first-come; first-served. This event will be presented in compliance with State of California and County of San Diego health regulations as applicable at the time of the lecture.

At each meeting, we will read and discuss a contemporary piece of poetry, write from a prompt for 10–15 mins, read/critique each other’s work, and discuss submissions. Participants should bring enough copies of a work in progress, not to exceed two pages in length.

PEEC is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media.

The program is free and reservations can be made by phone (858-454-5872) or email Maura Walters at mwalters@ljathenaeum.org. The main venue for the program is the Athenaeum’s art studio at 1008 Wall Street, entrance on Girard Avenue.

A talented and prolific singer-songwriter, Flan’s music enjoys radio support across the planet, from the shores of Ireland to beach towns up and down the California coast.

Jefferson Jay

San Diego Music Hall of Fame founder Jefferson Jay is also a veteran singer-songwriter and founder of the Acoustic Evenings concert series. He launched the series in 2008 as curator and host after completing his master’s thesis on the  Athenaeum Music & Arts Library’s history.

Bobo Czarnowski and Drew Cady

Bobo Czarnowski is a singer-songwriter who plays complex open tuning guitar melodies with evocative lyrics sung with a warm and inviting voice. His sound has been compared to Gordon Lightfoot and Tom Paxton (Troubadour). His album The Man I Hope to Be was nominated for Best Folk or Acoustic Album in the 31st San Diego Music Awards in 2022 and Thank You in 2023. Drew Cady accompanies him on cello.

Since their unprecedented success at the 2004 ARD Music Competition, the group has won numerous awards, including being the first ensemble ever to be honored with the Frankfurt Music Prize. This performance marks the Conrad debut for these celebrated musicians.
