La Jolla is home to some of the best hair salons and stylists around and fall is a great time to change your look from new color to a whole new cut.  This week we are putting Jayden Grey Salon in the La Jolla Limelight which means that you can win an incredible prize from one of our incredible businesses.  Tony Barnes, owner of Jayden Grey has generously donated a $250 gift certificate for one of our lucky social media fans.  He and his Glam Squad (pictured above) are eager to bring out the best in your look.  Click here to learn more at our Instagram account.

Here are some hair trends for Fall:

  1. Natural and Effortless Looks: Low-maintenance hairstyles that embrace natural hair textures and require minimal styling may continue to be on-trend. People might opt for wash-and-go styles or subtle enhancements that enhance their natural beauty.
  2. Warm Hair Colors: Warm and rich hair colors like caramel, copper, and auburn shades can complement the autumn season and add depth to hairstyles. Balayage and ombre techniques may still be popular for achieving a seamless blend of colors.
  3. Curtain Bangs: Curtain bangs, which frame the face with soft, face-framing layers, have been trendy in recent years and might continue to be a sought-after look for Fall 2023.
  4. Shaggy Layers: A modern take on the ’70s-inspired shag haircut might gain popularity, offering a versatile and textured look that works well for various hair lengths.
  5. Hair Accessories: Hair accessories can add a playful and stylish element to any hairstyle. Headbands, barrettes, scarves, and hairpins may continue to be in vogue.
  6. Short and Edgy Styles: Short haircuts with edgy elements like asymmetric cuts, bold color choices, and shaved designs could be popular for those looking to make a statement.
  7. Sustainable Haircare: As eco-consciousness grows, more people might seek sustainable and eco-friendly hair care products and practices.

Whether you want to refresh and renew your color or look, La Jolla Salons range from casual to swanky and everything in between. Besides Jayden Grey, La Jolla Village is home to many more salons.  Click on any of the La Jolla Salons below to learn more:

This week, we are delighted to introduce the first merchant featured for La Jolla Limelight: Parachute Studio! This art studio has a mission to help schools and home-schoolers provide sustainability-based art lessons to grade K-9. EcoArt is part of Parachute Studio’s A“Peel,” which owner Raychel Long describes as “all about appreciating and gaining knowledge about our world. Our art projects focus on sustainability and global issues while integrating important art techniques that level up creative skills.” Raychel’s dream was to work with kids and inspire them to be creative while understanding how they can make a difference in the world. She ended up buying ArtMe, a kids art studio on Prospect Street and turned it into Parachute Studio.

Rachel also shared what inspires her most when it comes to her business:

“Personally, when I see all the challenges that face the world today, I find hope in future generations.  Equipping children with a broad worldview and encouraging creative expression will go a long way in developing a more innovative future in which humans and the planet can thrive together.  My inspiration comes from the moment a child is proud of their artwork, the moment they ask a question and understand how they want to proceed, and every moment that a child is inspired to create.  That is why I have so much fun doing what I do and makes me feel like I have the best job in the world!”

Parachute Studio’s brick-and mortar-studio closed in December 2019, but Raychel has been operating the EcoArts program in elementary schools within the Poway School District. This summer, she will be partnering with La Jolla Recreation Center for summer camps. Summer camps will run for four weeks from June 21st to July 16th. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, students must book for the entire week, which presents the opportunity to revisit and add to the same art pieces day after day.

Regarding the upcoming summer camps, Raychel says, “I have always wanted to run a camp like this, and I’ve been so excited to offer these new activities.  We will work with lots of different supplies, like repurposed materials, oil pastels, acrylic, and watercolors.  The idea is to have a couple of outstanding art projects that the campers will be proud to display in their home, rather than a lot of small pieces that eventually get thrown away.”

These summer camps are a great way to engage with Parachute Studio. Check out the website, https://parachutearts.com, for more information on how to get involved and access video lessons for a variety of projects!

There’s a new Coffee House in town and it’s getting great buzz (pun intended — sorry!).  AT Coffee House, located at 1298 Prospect Street is particularly proud of its authentic, well-trained baristas who know how to make all things coffee including cold brew as pictured here! Check out AT Coffee House’s recent Yelp review: “Stumbled across this new coffee house whilst wandering around La Jolla yesterday. Sat in the “VIP suite” outside and took in the palm trees and blue sky. Enjoyed it so much we [plan] to go back today. Nice chat with Andy the owner, very friendly and welcoming- our new #1 spot for coffee in La Jolla. Terrific coffee, great ambiance.”

1058 Prospect St, La Jolla, CA

Following a La Jolla Village Merchants Association Marketing meeting part of the team headed to We Olive,  a favorite spot for a very romantic glass of wine and lite bites; not to mention one of the best olive oil tasting rooms anywhere.  The fun of our outing was getting creative to mix and match unique olive oils with equally unique balsamic vinegar.  Our favorite was the jalapeno oil with the pineapple balsamic.  The flavor combination (yes, you can drink the stuff!) would be incredible on rice, fish or chicken.

Be sure to stop by for the complimentary tastings of all of We Olive’s California Extra Virgin Olive Oils, vinegars, and gourmet foods and leave yourself time to sip a glass of wine on their balcony with stunning ocean and coastal views.

When are YOU going to get in touch and connect with us as we continue on to discover La Jolla’s complete restaurant scene?  Send an email to info@lajollabythesea.com and let us know you want to meet up for 52 in 52!

Follow us on Facebook or Instagram to find out when and where we’ll be each week and to keep up with our Foodie Finds.

Add your own dining stories and images to our social media by using #mylajolla.  It takes a Village to promote a Village!

Wedding planning requires couples to make many difficult decisions, but when choosing a location the answer is simple. For beach weddings, outdoor weddings and destination weddings, you won’t find a better spot than La Jolla.

There’s no place in San Diego more romantic, with more natural beauty, with proximity to such a high quality of hotels. And while the weather may not be perfect, it’s about as close as you can find. The abundance of sunshine and year-round temperate climate give about as close to a promise to cooperate as you’ll get, taking one less worry off the bride and groom’s list.

Beach Weddings

Many couples looking for outdoor weddings with a view of the ocean go with one of La Jolla’s parks. The grand Ellen Browning Scripps Park, beachfront Kellogg Park, and the delicately beautiful Cuvier Park (“The Wedding Bowl”) are among San Diego’s most popular wedding locations. The La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club is also a great resource to help put together a magical ceremony right on the sand. Other couples opt to exchange vows at sunset at the less formal but intensely romantic Windansea Beach. Another favorite for a memorable oceanfront wedding: the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Hotels

You can relax knowing your out-of-town guests will be spoiled once they check in to their hotel. For added convenience, some couples host both the wedding and reception at the hotel as well. You’ll save some money too, but won’t feel like you cut any corners. Popular choices include La Valencia, La Jolla Cove Suites, and Grande Colonial.

Surfing is the local favorite way to enjoy the beauty of the ocean. From dawn to nightfall, summer and winter, and even on the rare cloudy day, you’ll find surfers dotting the water in black wetsuits, carving white wake into the breaking waves. La Jolla’s diverse reefs and beaches offer a wide range of surfing conditions in relatively close proximity to each other.

Best Spot For Beginners:

La Jolla Shores. A basic beach break with reliable, predictable waves make this spot the most popular for surfers of all levels. Ample parking and surfing lessons from local surf schools available.

Best Beachbreak:

Black’s Beach. Considered by many to be San Diego’s best wave. Just be careful not to use up all your energy to get there; Black’s is only accessible by hiking down the cliff (with your surfboard) or the long walk from La Jolla Shores.

Most Exciting:

La Jolla Cove. You won’t often find surfable waves here but when you do, look out! Certain times each year, this break, just outside the protected area of The Cove, creates some of the largest waves in the area. The size and the rocks should scare beginners away and rightfully so, but make a great photo for those watching from shore.

Local’s Only:

Windansea. The secret is not just knowing where to go, but when. The variety of reef formations around the Windansea and Bird Rock areas, just south of downtown La Jolla, create conditions that are difficult to predict. The waves vary with the tides and best left to be surfed by advanced surfers who know them well.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

La Jolla Village is just a short hop to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, where you’ll find some of the best hiking trails in San Diego. Lace up your shoes, pack some sunscreen and drinking water, and be sure to bring your camera.

Many easy hikes under 2 miles (Razor Point, Yucca Point, Guy Fleming Trail, Parry Grove) will take about an hour to explore and offer simply breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean all year long. Beach Trail and Broken Trail are hikes with beach access and will deposit you down to the sands of cliff-lined Black’s Beach. The hiking trails are lined with gorgeous sandstone, succulents and springtime wildflowers. As you are traversing your way along, keep a close watch on the horizon where you may be lucky enough to spot gray whales or bottle-nosed dolphins splashing in the water.

La Jolla Walking Trail

Closer to the Village, the La Jolla Coast Walk Trail runs from La Jolla Shores beach to La Jolla Cove. It is easy and quite scenic. Park along Coast Blvd. The trailhead for this hike is just north to the left of the Cave Store. If you prefer to head south, follow the sidewalk that wraps around Kellogg Park and head towards the Children’s Pool, which, despite its name, is not a blue chlorine-filled rectangle but gorgeous secluded beach. Keep an eye in the ocean for harbor seals!

Divers from all over the world can’t resist submerging themselves in the beauty of La Jolla Cove. It’s caves, reef areas and kelp beds offer some of the region’s most interesting diving experiences. It’s a great spot for underwater photography or for just taking in the sights through your mask.

The cove’s waters are part of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve, a 6,000-acre area of protected tidelands and marine life. As a result, the cove is teeming with undisturbed sea life. Fish of every color of the rainbow, lobster, seals and sharks inhabit the cove. You are guaranteed to have some memorable undersea encounters.

The cove is a safe depth of approximately 15-30 feet, and enjoyed by divers of all skill levels, day and night. The moderate water temperature and calm current make it a great spot for beginners. There is a changing area nearby with bathrooms, showers and telephones.
