Mangelsen is as much an artist as he is a conservationist. Mangelsen’s photographs have been exhibited internationally. Showcased in Vital Signs: Images of Biodiversity, this exhibit was a combination of Mangelsen’s art and knowledge of natural history, and stressed the importance of maintaining a balanced and diverse ecosystem. Vital Signs opened at the San Diego Natural History Museum in 1997 and was also exhibited in museums throughout the United States and Canada. Tom’s photography has been shown at the Natural History Museum in London, the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska and in a major exhibit at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming and the San Diego Natural History Museum.

From a childhood fascination with the medium of photography to a reputation as one of the most consistent and respected landscape photographers in the industry, Ian Ely has been in pursuit of Mother Nature his entire life. Sometimes he gets there, sometimes not, but the one constant in this driven photographer’s life is the motivation and spirit to keep trying.

Ely’s passion for the outdoors developed over a childhood spent exploring his home state of California, punctuated by family road trips and wilderness camping in the Midwest. The true catalyst for what was to become his calling was his experience as a young boy traversing the mountains of Colorado aboard a backcountry steam train. At the time, Ely was so struck by the powerful beauty of the wild, unfettered landscape it made an indelible and enduring impression on his young sensibilities.

At the age of 10, he funded the purchase of his first camera by selling magazines and the building blocks of what was to evolve into his brilliant career were set in place. It was around this time he also began collecting postcards from around the country, which fed his enthusiasm for the photographic landscape image and became a defining source of his childhood aspirations to become a professional. Those images were his ‘happy place’ and, despite sharing a bedroom with three boisterous brothers, the world he created around his little corner of a bunk bed sustained the dreams of the life he envisioned for himself. Ely still has that original boyhood postcard collection and now, many years later, has visited around 90% of the locations – capturing his own depiction of the places that instilled in him such a lasting connection with nature.

Without the luxury of digital technology, the young Ely spent all his chore money on film for his camera. At that time, every click of the shutter cost him, so this early training afforded him the discipline to develop his technique and attention to detail.

After high school, Ely worked for a time with his father in the construction business. Although he always knew a life constrained by rules and time clocks was not for him, his experience in the industry proved valuable when it came to building his first gallery.

Schumacher has developed a unique alla prima, palette knife style. A paintbrush gives an artist control, but with a palette knife, she is able to stay loose, merging colors and sculpting wet paint into a dynamic final product. Her paintings take on a multi-dimensional form and are easily recognized for their use of heavy-texture and bold colors to emphasize nature’s spontaneity and beauty in a modern, abstract way.

Schumacher was born in 1991 at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. Growing up as a military brat, Schumacher moved often until her family settled along the beautiful Emerald Coast in Niceville, FL. At 16, Schumacher’s interest in art began when her mother took a painting class. Eager to be just like her mother, Krista started painting too. To this day, Krista and her mom, Kathy Schumacher, continue to collaborate in their careers, as mother-daughter palette knife artists. In 2019, Ferrari of San Diego hosted their first ever mother-daughter exhibition.

After graduating from the University of Florida, Krista joined Teach For America in San Antonio, TX. She then moved back to Niceville, FL to teach art full-time for the local school district while continuing to paint on the side. When Krista and her husband, Ben, moved to La Jolla in 2017, Krista decided to focus full-time on painting, releasing her debut palette knife collection.

Public response to her artwork exceeded her dreams. Schumacher was awarded Southwest Art Magazine’s “Top 21 Under 31” and was the Launchpad Artist for Art San Diego. She has collaborated with numerous corporations including Paramount Studios and Hilton, held multiple solo exhibitions, and has a rapidly growing collector base throughout the world.

George ‘Theo’ Theodorakos was born in Pensacola, Florida, in a family rich with Greek heritage and culture. Theo became interested in black and white photography at a young age, and afterward had immense and varied exposure to the arts in a myriad of forms – before ultimately deciding to open L&G Projects in the village of La Jolla, California.

After traveling the world – most notably France, Greece, and Italy, Theo realized it was possible – and necessary – to create a gallery that not only showcases talented, unknown artists but also curates the most personal experience possible for the clients. Theo’s favorite aspect of the trade is the intimate relationship he establishes and nurtures with both the artist and the art collectors.

Nathan Myhrvold, founder of Modernist Cuisine and lead author of Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking, Modernist Cuisine at Home, The Photography of Modernist Cuisine, and Modernist Bread, has had a passion for science, cooking, and photography since he was a boy. At the age of nine, Myhrvold cooked Thanksgiving dinner for his family, working out of cookbooks from the local library. A plastic camera was also his constant companion at that time.
