Looking to try a new restaurant in La Jolla? Craving East Coast seafood? Look no further than Lobster West located at 1237 Prospect in the heart of The Village! We sat down with owner and chef, Chad Taggart, to get the inside scoop on his restaurant that’s making waves in the village!

Where did the Lobster West culinary journey begin?

Beginning in 2013, Lobster West was founded by a New Jersey family’s love of East Coast seafood. Taking inspiration from Maine lobster rolls, the family put their heads together to create the perfect recipe to share with San Diegans. Wit

Chad

h only a few ingredients in the dish, Chad and his family made sure to have the freshest lobster, fantastic bread that is locally baked, and even the best butter and mayonnaise. Lobster West continues to fine-tune its recipe and share the magic with its customers!

What is the family background and how does it play into Lobster West?

Originating from New Jersey, Chad followed his mom and sister all the way to San Diego. While taking in the beautiful rays and rich culture, they still felt something was missing. Chad and his family worked together to bring some of their favorite food, lobster rolls, coast to coast. Lobster West was a “grassroots effort” by the family and their passion is translated into the exceptional taste of their food.

Where is Lobster West headed in the next 10 years?

With three locations already, Lobster West hopes to continue to expand its brand across San Diego. Never sacrificing quality over quantity, Lobster West continues to bring its crab cakes; chowder; and of course lobster, shrimp, and crab rolls to more and more San Diegans- the right way.

Where did the name ‘Lobster West’ come from?

Much like their menu, the beauty is in the simplicity. ‘Lobster West’ came from the act of taking east coast lobster and bringing it out west to the Golden Coast, a “to the point name”.

What is the inspiration behind being a business owner in La Jolla?

La Jolla is known for more than just beautiful beaches and playful seal pups, Chad loves the tight-knit community feel in La Jolla. The village is its “own entity” and neighbor-driven. With Lobster West’s family background, there’s no better place than La Jolla to begin community outreach and share the craft with others.

Lobster West is a must-visit for your next trip to La Jolla. Grab a drink, pick up an authentic Maine lobster roll, head down to one of our beautiful beaches, Scripps Park and enjoy America’s finest city!

As we celebrate the Ocean this month at First Friday Art Walk and as part of we look at what it means for a seafood restaurant to be sustainable, it means that the restaurant is operating with practices that promote the long-term health of our oceans, fisheries, and seafood supply chains. Specifically, a sustainable seafood restaurant adopts the following practices to ensure the long-term sustainability of seafood and the health of our oceans.

  1. Sources seafood responsibly: A sustainable seafood restaurant sources its seafood from sustainable fisheries, or from sources that have been certified by credible third-party organizations such as the Marine Stewardship Council or the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.
  2. Prioritizes locally sourced seafood: A sustainable seafood restaurant aims to source its seafood locally when possible to reduce the carbon footprint and support the local economy.
  3. Avoids serving endangered species: A sustainable seafood restaurant does not serve endangered species, and avoids serving seafood that is overfished or caught using harmful fishing methods such as bottom trawling or drift nets.
  4. Minimizes seafood waste: A sustainable seafood restaurant aims to minimize seafood waste by using every part of the fish and minimizing leftovers.
  5. Educates customers: A sustainable seafood restaurant educates its customers about sustainable seafood choices and the importance of responsible fishing practices.

La Jolla Village is proud to be home to some certified sustainable seafood restaurants including:

  1. Georges at the Cove

  2. Nine-Ten Restaurant and Bar

  3. Sushi Nekosan

  4. Lobster West

  5. El Pescador Fish Market

When it comes to frozen treats, La Jolla Village has you covered.  Not only are there smoothie places galore (see previous Blog Post), but La Jolla is also home to some of the best gelato, ice cream, and frozen yogurt shops in the area.  They are all delicious but distinct in terms o in terms of ingredients, preparation methods, and texture. Here’s a cool breakdown of their key differences and where to go to taste them all while in La Jolla:

  1. Where to Go:
    • Gelato: Boi Boi is the place for Gelato in La Jolla Village.  Unique flavors and free samples make this a must-visit stop for beach and park-goers alike.
    • Ice Cream: La Jolla is home to some of your favorites — Cold Stone (love the mix-ins), Haagan Dazs and Baskin Robbins are only steps away from La Jolla beaches and shops.
    • Frozen Yogurt:  Froglanders has everything you need from rotating flavors and so many toppings. They have crepes too!  Flavors change daily; toppings add to the fun and flavor.
  1. Ingredients:
    • Gelato: Gelato is an Italian-style ice cream that is made with milk, sugar, and flavorings such as fruit purees, nuts, and chocolate. It typically contains less fat than ice cream and is churned at a slower speed, resulting in a denser texture.
    • Ice Cream: Ice cream is a dairy-based frozen dessert made with cream, milk, sugar, and flavorings. It has a higher fat content compared to gelato and is usually churned at a faster speed, incorporating more air into the mixture giving it a lighter texture.
    • Frozen Yogurt: Frozen yogurt is made from yogurt instead of cream, making it lower in fat. It typically contains milk, sugar, and yogurt cultures. It can have a tangy flavor similar to yogurt and is often available in various fruit flavors.
  2. Fat Content:
    • Gelato: Gelato usually contains less butterfat than ice cream, typically around 3-8%.
    • Ice Cream: Ice cream typically has a higher butterfat content, ranging from 10% to 18% or more.
    • Frozen Yogurt: Frozen yogurt generally has a lower fat content than ice cream and can range from 0.5% to 6%.
  3. Churning Process:
    • Gelato: Gelato is churned at a slower speed than ice cream, which results in less air incorporation and a denser texture.
    • Ice Cream: Ice cream is churned at a faster speed, incorporating more air, resulting in a lighter and fluffier texture.
    • Frozen Yogurt: The churning process for frozen yogurt is similar to ice cream, creating a texture that falls between gelato and ice cream.
  4. Serving Temperature:
    • Gelato: Gelato is typically served at a slightly warmer temperature than ice cream, which allows its flavors to be more pronounced.
    • Ice Cream: Ice cream is served at a colder temperature, which gives it a firmer consistency.
    • Frozen Yogurt: Frozen yogurt is served at a similar temperature to ice cream.
  5. Nutritional Profile:
    • Gelato: Gelato tends to be lower in fat but higher in sugar compared to ice cream.
    • Ice Cream: Ice cream is higher in fat but lower in sugar compared to gelato.
    • Frozen Yogurt: Frozen yogurt is often marketed as a healthier alternative to ice cream since it typically contains less fat. However, the nutritional content can vary depending on the specific recipe and toppings added.

Now that you know the scoop, make sure to chill out with a cool treat!

Ready for a little thirst-quenching adventure? Fasten up your sneaker laces and head off on a La Jolla GPS-guided La Jolla walking tour, hitting some of the best happy hours on the tour route. There is an abundance of eateries, restaurants, and taverns where you can drop in. With the long days of summer, the happy hour options along the path of our La Jolla: The Riviera of California tour will add an exciting and romantic experience and will save some cash. Make as many bar stops as your heart desires, GPS knows where you are and will keep you on track. You tour freely – no tour guide needed!  Keep in mind that offers and hours are subject to change.

So, here we go – a short list of recommendations to imbibe a bit of the bubbly or whatever suits your fancy on the walking tour. (Without stops, the walking tour takes 60-75 minutes.) We start our La Jolla Happy Hour Bar Crawl at the beginning of our tour on Prospect Street at Eddie V’s restaurant. Then we’ll head south to the Scripps Gill Cultural Zone and make the turn towards the coast at the Contemporary Art Museum of San Diego then head north towards La Jolla Cove. So, let’s get going and see what the tour offers.

Eddie V’sEddie V's Green Dragon

Noteworthy fact: When you walk through the front door and take a left and look out through the windows you will see a fantastic ocean view and if you then look to your left you will see a fireplace (see below) that has historical significance.
Time: Sunday through Thursday, 4 – 6:30 PM in the V Lounge
Specials:  Shareable teasers starting at $7, select hand-shaken cocktails and wines by the glass starting at $8 and specially priced oysters.
Reasons to Go: As you approach Eddie V’s from Prospect St you will see a sign in the grass that says, “Green Dragon Colony”. In the late 19th century, architect Irving Gill was commissioned to design and build a small community on this cliff-side lot overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Gill completed the project in 1906 and the result was eleven small cottages called the Green Dragon Colony that was dedicated to the arts. The Colony was renowned for producing some of the finest artwork in the region and an old stone fireplace from one of the original cabins still survives inside the restaurant. To the right is a photo from the original construction.
Address: 1270 Prospect Street, La Jolla, CA 92037

Level 2 at George’s at the Cove

The beauty of the spring season is underway here in La Jolla. We’re saying goodbye to winter and welcoming warmer weather! The change of seasons shows us how beautiful our planet truly is and what it has to offer. La Jolla is a perfect April destination, especially to celebrate Earth Day at the end of the month. One of the best ways to do this is to eat at sustainable restaurants with friends and family. Here are some sustainable and environmentally friendly restaurants to go to during the month of April:

  1. Green Door Café has been offering their customers environmentally friendly food since 2009. Besides having a variety of choices on their breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus, with dishes such as pancakes, tacos, and pasta, Green Door Café owner and CEO Martin Hall is passionate about serving cruelty-free, plant-based, pesticide-free, and locally sourced food right here in La Jolla on Girard Ave! Green Door Café strives to serve their guests with originally created dishes that are based on a seasonal menu, picking up their ingredients from local farmers markets.
  2. Olive and Basil is another great place to eat during this time of year. Not only is their food healthy and delicious, but this restaurant serves fresh and organic food from local farmers’ markets all year round. There are lots of items to choose from, with a variety of salad dishes, burgers, and even tacos! Guests are sure to eat excellent quality food either within the restaurant or at home with takeout options. With the head chef having over two decades of experience in the industry, Olive and Basil is passionate about serving the best food to their guests.
  3. Parakeet Café is a wonderful place to go to not only get a morning or afternoon coffee, but also to get fresh, organic ingredients with all of their food items such as yogurt and other breakfast bowls, waffles, and egg dishes. This all started when owners Carol and Jonathan Goldwasser went through a challenging time helping their daughter get treated for a rare disease. Upon this, they discovered food is what made her feel better and have since made it a mission to serve high quality, organic food to their guests with lots of flavor and lots of colors too!
  4. Trilogy Sanctuary also serves up many environmentally friendly options! This restaurant serves vegan and plant-based cuisine on Girard Ave with items like acai bowls, and smoothies, just to name a few! Owners Joe and Leila have been in the holistic and yoga industry for many years and have extensive knowledge of healthy eating while also wanting to emphasize spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being among their customers. Not only do they want their guests to be eating healthy and wholesome food, but also want them to be happy!

Food is a gateway to culture. SWNS reported on a study on food and its unifying power, and noted that 84% of the American respondents said that food is the key to sharing and experiencing different cultures.

Most people thus travel to different countries in order to try out traditional cuisine. But here at La Jolla, we have our own variety of dining options that will allow you to explore cultures different from your own.

Take a gastronomic trip around the world by visiting the following La Jolla restaurants.

The Taco Stand

Taco StandImage taken from The Taco Stand Official Facebook page.

Inspired by the taco stands of Tijuana where co-owner Julian Hakim lived until he was 18, The Taco Stand is a go-to place for anyone craving the authentic taste of Mexican food. The restaurant’s attention to detail is evident in its handmade tortillas, guacamole and salsa made from scratch, and traditional meat preparation using a roasting spit. There’s no doubt why The Taco Stand was deemed part of TripAdvisor’s list of highly rated restaurants in the US.

While the Carne Asada Fries are to die for, The Taco Stand’s Al Pastor Tacos are also sure to satisfy your palate. Vegetarians can also try out the Nopal Taco, which has flame-grilled cactus as its main ingredient.

Spiro’s Cuisine

SprirosImage taken from Spiro’s Cuisine Official Instagram page.

Journey to the islands of Mykonos and Santorini without having to leave the comfort of La Jolla. Spiro’s serves Mediterranean cuisine that’s sure to transport you to paradise with delectable platters and generous portion sizes. Owners Nancy and Spiro Chaconas pride themselves on inheriting authentic Greek recipes from family and sourcing their oils and spices straight from Greece.

Spiro’s offers an unforgettable dining experience with its must-try gyros, kabob plates, and melt-in-your-mouth pita sandwiches. Complete these meals with appetizers, Greek salads, or falafel and tzatziki for sides! If you have a particularly sweet tooth, then you’ll enjoy feasting on Spiro’s baklava or gelato until sunset.

Marisi

MarisiImage taken from Marisi Official Instagram page.

Whether you’re in the mood for a romantic date night or a delectable dinner with the family, we’ve got you covered. Marisi honors the tradition of Italian cooking by specializing in handmade pastas and hearth cooking. This exquisite spot where the Amalfi and La Jolla coasts intersect dedicates spaces for both al fresco and intimate dining.

As Marisi sources its ingredients from local farmers and fishermen, you’re guaranteed only the freshest and highest quality food. Among the standout pasta dishes are strascinati paired with lamb ragu, spaghettoni al Pomodoro, and rigatoni with stracciatella. You can also indulge in line-caught fish with smoked San Marzanos and lemon—cooked straight from the open kitchen’s hearth. Top off these gustatory delights with a glass of vermouth or a cocktail of your choice.

Spice up your dining options with the simple yet sophisticated dishes of AROI Thai. This family-owned restaurant serves a variety of Thai food, from soups and noodles to curries and rice dishes. Lots of vegetarian-friendly choices, too!

If it’s your first time exploring the taste of Thailand, then it’s recommended that you try the spicy and sour tom yum soup or the famed rice noodles with peanut sauce known as pad thai. Those aiming to level up their experience can opt for the spicy Drunken Noodles, the Thai Boat with your choice of meat, and the special sauce of the Panang Curry. Don’t forget to make some room for sweet mango sticky rice and freshly brewed Thai iced tea!

Duke’s La Jolla

DukesImage taken from Duke’s La Jolla Official Website.

You’re guaranteed to have a fun time with family and friends when you visit the sprawling space of Duke’s. Named after native Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku, Duke’s La Jolla is an iconic restaurant serving contemporary interpretations of traditional Hawaiian dishes.

The vibrant spirit of the beach lifestyle is not only palpable from the surfboard decor, but also comes to life through its Poke Tacos, Kalua Pork Sandwich, and Roasted Duke’s Fish. If you happen to pass by the bar, try out their craft beers or the Duke’s signature Mai Tai cocktail to complete the vibe!

Blue Ocean / Harumama

Blue OceanImage taken from La Jolla By The Sea Website.

The last one (or is it two?) on the list is the dual concept Blue Ocean and Harumama, which combines two Asian seaside spots into one. This creative restaurant offers a formal seafood dining experience through Blue Ocean’s sashimi, poke bowls, and sushi rolls—the last of which can be elevated by adding blue crab or freshly chopped wasabi.

Its other side Harumama serves East Asian-inspired ramen bowls with a choice of toppings like kimchi, bok choy, or bamboo shoots, as well as steamed buns filled with pork belly, shrimp, duck, or karaage chicken. Don’t forget to snap a pic of their cutesy character steamed buns for your Instagram feed!

Eat well anywhere

You can also never go wrong with trying out cultural recipes in your own home! Experts and aspiring home chefs alike can try the famous Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat written by Samin Nosrat and illustrated by Wendy MacNaughton. It teaches you to use the four titular elements for flavor and texture, and also allows you to put these culinary principles into action through globe-trotting recipes for short ribs, focaccia, escabeche, scorched rice, and more.

If your kitchen skills aren’t quite enough to sate your culturally curious taste buds, you can also opt to hire private chefs if you have the means for it. As a private chef and co-founder of Bad Boyz of Culinary, Kelston Moore intends to showcase the culinary influences of his Barbados background and to build a community for his fellow African American chefs in La Jolla, which sounds like great news for clients.

With a diversity of culture and cuisine waiting to be explored and celebrated, La Jolla is truly alive!

La Jolla Merchants Association is thrilled to support another incredible event that has relocated to our beautiful village the weekend of September 24 – 25.  San Diego Festival Founder and long-time La Jolla resident, Liz Edwards, invites you to join other cocktail lovers for this world-class event where cocktails, culture, and art come together for a two-day experience fueled by top spirits and bespoke cocktails. The event which most recently took place in downtown San Diego will move to its new location at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla for the 13th annual San Diego Spirits Festival to celebrate cocktails, culture, and art!

Explains Edwards, “This is a lifestyle festival that offers an upscale, fun event that appeals to everyone from novice cocktail lovers and fashionistas, to experienced mixology professionals and restaurateurs. Attendees can explore the world of whiskey, bourbon, tequila, rum, gin, vodka and other fine spirits, plus ready-to-drink beverages including seltzers, canned cocktails and more. By moving the festival to the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla we take our beloved So Cal spirits festival to new heights, where art, culture and cocktails will come together for a sensational two-day event. Our move from downtown San Diego to La Jolla will build on our festival’s loyal following while attracting a new audience within La Jolla and adding new layers to this world-class event.”

La Jolla Village Restaurants are invited to take part in the first major event of the La Jolla High School Foundation since COVID!

Participating restaurants will supply a food or beverage “taster” for approximately 150 – 200 guests in exchange for major promotion and publicity to all families in the La Jolla schools — which includes nearly 3,500 students. Promotion will be through various channels including school-sponsored emails, social media, the La Jolla Light, and through LJVMA

What’s in it for YOU?

  • Build your local customer base. These are La Jolla LOCALS.- so it’s a great opportunity to attract local families back to the village restaurants.
  • Stand Out from the Rest – The number of restaurants will be limited in order to allow participants to reach every site.
  • Direct Promotion Opportunity – All participating restaurants are encouraged to give a “bounceback offer’ to attendees. Feel free to have this available with your tasters.
  • Boost bar sales – Historically restaurants experienced a major spike in bar sales as attendees congregated at participating merchants.
  • Warm, fuzzy feeling – -It’s charity!! Feel great about supporting underfunded programs at LJHS.

Restaurants wishing to be included in the event can click HERE

Please note: The number of restaurants is limited in order to insure the best experience for all!

Every year, during the month of June, the LGBT community and supporters celebrate the influence LGBT people have had around the world. Why was June chosen? Because it is when the Stonewall Riots took place, way back in 1969.  This month, La Jolla First Friday Art Walk shines the light on LGBTQ community groups, artists, and impacts.  In the spirit of diversity, equality, and inclusion, La Jolla Village strives to be a place that welcomes everyone — no matter who they love!  A special thanks to LGBTQ+ organizations joining us for this very special evening.

Experience an evening at La Jolla’s new and iconic art galleries as art enthusiasts sip, snack, and stroll. The Stonewall Riots, beginning in June 1969, symbolized a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ rights. In honor of the Stonewall Uprising, the First Friday Art Walk, on June 3, celebrates PRIDE.  There will be  5 LGBTQ organizations attending the PRIDE Art Walk to share information and resources about their services and activities.

Attendees will stroll through the visiting art galleries and artists while enjoying tasty food and beverages. Catering the event will be Eddie V’s; the soon-to-be-opened Java Earth Coffee; and the brand new Lobster West, which celebrated its ribbon cutting last week. The San Diego Spirits Festival will also sponsor unique tastings and cocktails at various galleries.  This month, after the Art Walk, LIK Fine Art will feature an event beginning at 7:15: Embody Art Yoga and Meditation with Linda Gastaldello. Other highlights include:

  • L&G Projects hosts the incredible Tel Aviv artist Orit Fuchs who is known for her bold, dynamic female images.
  • Krista Schumacher’s mother and inspiration, Kathy Schumacher, will be in town as she and Krista reveal their 2022 mother/daughter painting.
  • The Conrad Performing Arts Center host local artist Edna Pines in the WuTsai QRT.yrd by the Ed Kornhauser Jazz Trio. The Cove House and Sotheby’s will feature other local artists.

While the event is FREE and no tickets are required we ask that all guests PRE-REGISTER HERE in order to help galleries estimate attendance.   When you do, you will be offered a FREE PARKING PASS for the event, compliments of ACE Mobility.
