This is the artist’s second show with the gallery\, following a 2023 presentation of her painting Rest Assured\, You Are In Good Hands at ONE. \n\nThese new oil paintings resonate with Chapin’s surreal style of patterning and further develop her interest in modes of figuration. Through the poses of her sitters\, each fully concealed by checked and striped fabrics\, she navigates collective human sentiments in life-sized scale and manufactures a limbo in which they all reside. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn her simulated realities\, Chapin’s faceless figures emerge from prismatic interlocking waves in contradicting or mirrored formats. A central body often appears self-assured\, pensive\, and at times seductive\, while transparent doubles float adjacent in space in physical and emotional states of languish. Languishing\, a term representing a feeling of emptiness and stagnation\, was notably made popular when the New York Times coined it “the dominant emotion of 2021” following tides of pandemic-induced societal shifts. Chapin leans into the tensions of this zeitgeist\, like the dominance of the “digital self” and how her chronically online generation constructs themselves for their perceived audience and performs within an overtly commercialized system. \n\nHer transparent figures may be simultaneously read as the shadow self\, a concept appropriated from Jungian psychology to online self-help jargon that encourages a radical integration of our less desirable characteristics\, failures and wrongdoing with our external self. Chapin approaches these melodramas from a dualistic perspective\, with empathy for human complexity while signaling a pre-determined system we find ourselves in. Throughout each artwork\, repetitive visual patterns imprint on these forms\, creating a tangle between where we come from and what we are exposed to. In both process and concept\, this element of reflexivity\, as it relates to the construction of value\, has become a throughline in Chapin’s art practice. \n\nTaylor Chapin was born and raised in Encinitas\, California. She received a BFA in Painting from San Francisco Art Institute in 2016\, and graduated with a MFA in Visual Art from University of California\, San Diego in 2022. She has shown her work at institutions throughout southern California including ICA San Diego\, the Oceanside Museum of Art\, and the San Diego Library. She has also recently created public-facing murals in Leucadia and Oceanside as well as the UCSD campus. Chapin lives and works in Oceanside\, California.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an artist talk by San Diego–based visual artist Victoria Fu. Working across multiple disciplines\, her artwork incorporates analog and digital textures in installations that layer virtual and actual spaces. On Thursday\, April 11\, Fu will share a special presentation on her career\, process\, recent projects\, and 2016 mural for Murals of La Jolla\, Suns\, created in collaboration with Byron Kim. The reception will take place at 6 p.m.\, followed by a lecture at 6:30 p.m. \nFu was born in Santa Monica\, California. She received her MFA from CalArts\, MA in art history/museum studies from University of Southern California\, and BA from Stanford University. She attended the Whitney Independent Study Program and was in residence at Skowhegan. Fu has received grants from Art Matters\, Rema Hort Mann Foundation\, and Harpo Foundation and is a Guggenheim Fellow. Her artwork is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York; Pérez Art Museum\, Miami\, Florida; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; MIT List Visual Arts Center\, Cambridge\, Massachusetts ; and Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. She lives and works in San Diego\, California\, where she is Associate Professor of Art at the University of San Diego. \nMural Members and Makers attend FREE and will receive an email to RSVP for the lecture. \nThe lecture will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for this event. Your name will be on an attendee list at the front door. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Seating is first-come; first-served. DESCRIPTION:PEEC for TEENS (13–18 years old)  with a different special guest artist every week \nCheck the event website for this week’s special guest! \nPEEC is a free program for teens\, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art\, share stories\, collaborate\, explore\, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities\, resources\, guidance\, instruction\, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields\, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing\, painting\, research\, and introduction to various media. \nThe program is free and reservations can be made by phone (858-454-5872) or email Maura Walters at mwalters@ljathenaeum.org. The main venue for the program is the Athenaeum’s art studio at 1008 Wall Street\, entrance on Girard Avenue.

A talented and prolific singer-songwriter\, Flan’s music enjoys radio support across the planet\, from the shores of Ireland to beach towns up and down the California coast. \nJefferson Jay \nSan Diego Music Hall of Fame founder Jefferson Jay is also a veteran singer-songwriter and founder of the Acoustic Evenings concert series. He launched the series in 2008 as curator and host after completing his master’s thesis on the  Athenaeum Music & Arts Library’s history. \nBobo Czarnowski and Drew Cady \nBobo Czarnowski is a singer-songwriter who plays complex open tuning guitar melodies with evocative lyrics sung with a warm and inviting voice. His sound has been compared to Gordon Lightfoot and Tom Paxton (Troubadour). His album The Man I Hope to Be was nominated for Best Folk or Acoustic Album in the 31st San Diego Music Awards in 2022 and Thank You in 2023. Drew Cady accompanies him on cello.

One not-so-obvious twist is having a female vocalist own these tunes as well as many others\, by the Commodores\, Journey\, Sam Cooke\, Marvin Gaye and others. Her sets also include “deep tracks”- songs that were loved but are not as commonly played now. Folks in the audience break into smiles\, nods\, and dance moves when these songs are played\, as they bring a fresh twist mixed in with classics like Heard it Through the Grapevine and Let’s Stay Together. \nMaria’s backing group provides great grooves and textures for Maria’s singing; whether a sweet ballad\, medium swing\, dance floor rocker or all out disco inferno\, this group has everything you’ll want to hear!

Currently based in San Diego California\, Ezra studied art at the Academy of Art San Francisco\, and his father was an artist\, who inspired him to pursue his artistic career. \nHaving people relate to his struggles is a beautiful thing to witness\, and he hopes to inspire people young and old with art created from a personal experience. \n\n\n\nAbout 5&A Dime\n\n\nMeet Jason (Jay) and Darcie Huggins\, the dynamic brother-sister duo behind San Diego’s quirkiest store.
