This is the artist’s second show with the gallery\, following a 2023 presentation of her painting Rest Assured\, You Are In Good Hands at ONE. \n\nThese new oil paintings resonate with Chapin’s surreal style of patterning and further develop her interest in modes of figuration. Through the poses of her sitters\, each fully concealed by checked and striped fabrics\, she navigates collective human sentiments in life-sized scale and manufactures a limbo in which they all reside. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn her simulated realities\, Chapin’s faceless figures emerge from prismatic interlocking waves in contradicting or mirrored formats. A central body often appears self-assured\, pensive\, and at times seductive\, while transparent doubles float adjacent in space in physical and emotional states of languish. Languishing\, a term representing a feeling of emptiness and stagnation\, was notably made popular when the New York Times coined it “the dominant emotion of 2021” following tides of pandemic-induced societal shifts. Chapin leans into the tensions of this zeitgeist\, like the dominance of the “digital self” and how her chronically online generation constructs themselves for their perceived audience and performs within an overtly commercialized system. \n\nHer transparent figures may be simultaneously read as the shadow self\, a concept appropriated from Jungian psychology to online self-help jargon that encourages a radical integration of our less desirable characteristics\, failures and wrongdoing with our external self. Chapin approaches these melodramas from a dualistic perspective\, with empathy for human complexity while signaling a pre-determined system we find ourselves in. Throughout each artwork\, repetitive visual patterns imprint on these forms\, creating a tangle between where we come from and what we are exposed to. In both process and concept\, this element of reflexivity\, as it relates to the construction of value\, has become a throughline in Chapin’s art practice. \n\nTaylor Chapin was born and raised in Encinitas\, California. She received a BFA in Painting from San Francisco Art Institute in 2016\, and graduated with a MFA in Visual Art from University of California\, San Diego in 2022. She has shown her work at institutions throughout southern California including ICA San Diego\, the Oceanside Museum of Art\, and the San Diego Library. She has also recently created public-facing murals in Leucadia and Oceanside as well as the UCSD campus. Chapin lives and works in Oceanside\, California.

DESCRIPTION:Many of us in San Diego don’t know where our water comes from. During this conversation we will discuss how to better understand how you can feel empowered to not only enhance your own water resources in the face of an uncertain water future\, but also the resilience of your neighborhood and our ecological communities including the ocean and the waterways that feed it. \nUsing passive and active rainwater harvesting and relying on greywater for our landscape irrigation means we use less energy\, create more beautiful and nurturing landscapes\, and keep our waterways clean while reducing flooding during rain events. More climate appropriate plants mean healthier soils which means reducing carbon emissions and even sequestering carbon! \nWe all need water to live! Let’s nurture and value our relationship with it now. \n\nHIGHLIGHTS:\n-Over 600 gallons falls on a 1000 square foot roof when it rains. Let’s design our rainwater storage well\n– Rainwater is a great resource for growing food! Plants much prefer it to city water resources\n– greywater is gently used shower/laundry water. Get 2 uses out of the water you paid for by routing it out to your landscape\n– “saving water” doesn’t mean you need to have a boring and arid landscape. We need trees\, plants for pollinators\, and to grow food in our community\n\nTICKET: $15 \nBIO\nBrook is co-owner and CEO of CatchingH2O. Her engineering background perfectly complements the permaculture design framework she uses to approach design problems. She graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from University of the Pacific in Stockton\, California in 2001. She received her Permaculture Certificate in 2008 from ECOSA Institute in Prescott\, Arizona. Brook also completed the Watershed Management Group Water Harvesting Certification Course as well as a Watershed Restoration Course with Craig Sponholtz. Brook received the Water Warrior Award from the Surfrider Foundation in 2011 for her on the ground work in water conservation. \nBrook started her first company H2OME in 2008 with a mission to educate and support her community in becoming water resilient. DESCRIPTION:Comedian\, actor and best selling author\, Jay Mohr has been performing stand-up comedy since he was sixteen years old. With a career that has spanned over three decades\, Jay has become an artist that is very difficult to define. Never wanting to rest on his accomplishments\, Jay has always pushed himself to be more than just a comic. \n  \nAfter landing his dream job of Saturday Night Live\, it appeared as though Jay had reached the height of comedic success. Little did he know that just three years later\, he would be cast opposite Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire and that same year co-star with Jennifer Anniston in Picture Perfect. Now the world that knew “comedian Jay” was quickly introduced to the “actor Jay.” Never wanting to choose one career over the other\, Mohr has brilliantly balanced both acting and stand-up comedy as roommates in his brain. \n  \nAdditionally\, he has continuously added other genres to his journey and wrote the best selling book Gasping for Airtime about his time on SNL and his battle with panic attacks throughout his tenure on the show. To this day the book remains a must read for both fans of the show\, followers of Jay\, as well as people who suffer from social anxiety\, depression and panic disorders. \n  \nOn a much lighter note\, Jay’s second book was the hilarious\, No Wonder My Parents Drank\, which describes in painful and beautifully funny detail the pros and cons of parenthood… which was subsequently optioned by ABC for development of a sitcom based on its content. \n  \nJay Mohr is the rarest of entertainers. After 25 films and starring in his own groundbreaking series produced by Joel Silver and the late Ted Demme (Action) he starred in the CBS scripted comedy Gary Unmarried\, which was critically acclaimed and was on for two seasons. \n  \nJay has guest starred in over 50 different television dramas and comedy series episodes\, but his most recent turn on an episode of Dick Wolf’s Law and Order: Criminal Intent as a Charlie Sheen type character ripped from the headlines\, has garnered him the most attention and respect. “He’s really good” said Wolf\, “it’s kind of odd because he is known as a comic and this is a highly dramatic role that a lot of dramatic actors would have had a very hard time eschewing and he does a great job.” He added “… you know\, it’s like if you’re playing tennis against a club champion\, you’re game should go up… the better the competition the better the game… and I think Jay really came to play.” \n  \nThroughout his journey\, Jay still loves performing stand-up comedy it’s in his blood\, his bones and his DNA. Anyone that has ever seen one of his concerts will be quick to tell you that there is no one better. Comedy Central agrees\, having named Mohr one of the 100 greatest stand-up comics of all time. A simple bio doesn’t do the stage show justice… as there are no notes\, no two shows the same\, and an act that never picks on the audience. These are the three tenets that Jay believes makes great live comedy\, and the foundation is laid when Jay often tells his audiences\, “Lets just jump off a cliff together and build our wings on the way down!”
