Visit California, the state’s official travel and tourism organization is on a mission to enhance and elevate the travel experience for both visitors and residents alike. They have embarked on an exciting process to create Regional Tourism Strategic Plans (RTSP) for all 12 regions across the state including San Diego. Your voice can play a pivotal role in this journey and future decisions.  To be included we are asking you to complete a brief but critical survey. The more San Diego businesses that respond the more our input will be considered as Visit California allocates future resources.

The goal of this survey is to guide the development of the Regional Strategic Plan by gaining a greater understanding about the following:

·         The existing strengths of the tourism economy

·         Opportunities to enhance the tourism ecosystem

·         Identify future areas of focus for the strategic planning process

·         Market research needs of tourism stakeholders

This feedback will directly inform the regional plans and give direction for priorities and recommendations. As such, we invite and strongly encourage you to participate in the survey and share with your industry partners.

The survey should take 15-20 minutes to complete. Please answer questions where you are familiar with the subject matter. If you are not familiar with the content, or don’t have an opinion on a particular subject, please skip to the next question.

Click HERE to take the survey.

This effort is being facilitated by JLL’s Tourism and Destination Advisory Practice, in cooperation with Ernst & Young. All responses will be confidential and only shared in the aggregate.
For technical questions, please contact Edmond Nana (Edmond.NanaJimngang@ey.com). For all other questions, please send an email to Bethanie DeRose (Bethanie.DeRose@jll.com). If you decide to take the survey in multiple sittings and would like to pick up where you left off, you’ll need to re-access the survey via the same IP address and browser. If you started the survey and re-accessed it via a different browser or IP address, your previously provided responses won’t be saved.

The holidays can be a joyous time but also pose a heightened threat of theft for retailers, as crowded stores can create more opportunities for thieves to strike. While La Jolla is one of the safest neighborhoods in the region, it is not immune to crime and vandalism.  As a store owner, it’s crucial to take proactive steps to protect your business from theft and break-ins during this festive time. Here are ten practical tips to help you secure your store and create a safe and secure shopping environment for your customers.

  1. Invest in Security Systems: Consider installing a comprehensive security system tailored to your store’s needs, including surveillance cameras, burglar alarms, and access control systems. Visible security measures act as deterrents, discouraging potential thieves from targeting your store.
  2. Adequate Lighting: Ensure that your store is well-lit, both inside and outside, to enhance the overall shopping experience and eliminate hiding spots for would-be thieves. Well-lit exteriors make it easier for passersby and security cameras to monitor the surroundings.
  3. Train Your Staff: Educate your staff on security protocols and the importance of remaining vigilant during busy times. Implement procedures for handling suspicious behavior and ensure that all employees are aware of emergency protocols. Encourage open communication to create a collaborative and secure working environment.
  4. Control Access: Limit access to sensitive areas of your store by using key cards or key codes. This helps prevent unauthorized individuals from entering spaces where valuable merchandise or sensitive information is stored. Regularly update access credentials and change codes to maintain security.
  5. Implement Inventory Control: Keep a close eye on your inventory, especially high-value items. Implement a robust inventory management system to track stock levels and monitor any discrepancies. Regularly conduct inventory audits to identify and address any potential issues promptly.
  6. Strengthen Windows and Doors: Ensure that all windows and doors are secure. Consider installing security film on windows to make them more resistant to breakage. Reinforce doors with quality locks and deadbolts. Regularly inspect and maintain these features to ensure their effectiveness.
  7. Collaborate with Local Law Enforcement: Establish a relationship with local law enforcement and inform them of your store’s operating hours. They may be able to provide additional patrols during peak shopping times or offer advice on security measures tailored to your location.
  8. Utilize E-Commerce Safeguards: If your store has an online presence, implement secure payment gateways and encryption measures to protect customer data. Monitor online transactions for any suspicious activity and update your website security regularly.
  9. Display Security Signage: Place visible signs throughout your store, indicating the presence of security measures. This not only deters potential thieves but also reassures customers that you take their safety seriously.
  10. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of local crime trends and share relevant information with your staff. Join local business associations or forums where you can exchange security tips and experiences with other store owners.

By taking these proactive measures to safeguard your store during the holiday season, you not only protect your merchandise and assets but also create a secure and welcoming environment for your customers. Implementing a comprehensive security strategy, training your staff, and staying informed about potential risks are essential steps in ensuring a joyful and secure shopping experience for everyone.

Shopping locally can have many benefits for both consumers and the community as a whole. Here are some reasons why you might choose to shop local:

  1. Support local businesses: When you shop at local businesses, you are supporting your community and helping to keep money within the local economy. Local businesses are often owned and operated by members of the community, and shopping there can help create jobs and boost the local economy.
  2. Unique products and services: Local businesses often offer unique products and services that cannot be found at big-box stores or chains. These businesses may specialize in niche markets, offer one-of-a-kind products, or provide specialized services that are not available elsewhere.
  3. Personalized service: Local businesses often provide more personalized service than larger retailers. The staff may be more knowledgeable about the products they are selling and can offer recommendations based on your specific needs.
  4. Environmental impact: Shopping locally can have a positive impact on the environment by reducing transportation emissions and supporting sustainable practices. Local businesses may source their products locally and use sustainable packaging, reducing their carbon footprint.
  5. Community involvement: Local businesses often have a strong connection to the community and may participate in community events or support local causes. By shopping locally, you are supporting businesses that care about the community and give back in meaningful ways.

Overall, shopping locally can have many benefits for both consumers and the community. It can help support local businesses, provide unique products and services, offer personalized service, reduce environmental impact, and foster community involvement.

Running for a seat on a board of directors is an important decision and involves guiding and making decisions for an organization, whether it’s a corporation, nonprofit, community group, or other entity. The La Jolla Village Merchants Association Board is a passionate group of business owners, managers and leaders.  Our mission, “We bring business to La Jolla Village businesses” is our driving force.

Here are some common reasons why you might consider joining the LJVMA Board: :

  1. Leadership and Influence: Serving on a board offers the opportunity to play a key role in shaping the direction and policies of the organization. Board members have a say in major decisions that can impact the organization’s future.
  2. Expertise and Experience: Individuals with specific skills, expertise, or experience in a relevant field may choose to join a board to share their insights and contribute to the organization’s growth and success.
  3. Passion for the Cause: If the organization’s mission aligns with your personal values and passions, serving on the board can be a way to actively support and drive positive change in areas that matter to you.
  4. Networking: Being part of a board allows you to connect with other professionals, leaders, and influencers who share similar interests. This networking can open doors to new opportunities and collaborations.
  5. Professional Development: Serving on a board can enhance your leadership skills, strategic thinking, decision-making abilities, and understanding of governance principles—qualities that can benefit your career.
  6. Giving Back: Many individuals run for a board of directors as a way to give back to their community or a cause they care about. It’s a way to contribute your time, skills, and resources to help make a positive impact.
  7. Influence and Change: If you’re passionate about making changes within an organization, joining the board provides an avenue to drive those changes and contribute to the organization’s growth and improvement.
  8. Community Engagement: Serving on a board can connect you more deeply with your local community or a community of interest, allowing you to contribute to its well-being and development.
  9. Mentorship and Learning: Being part of a board offers the chance to learn from other experienced professionals and mentors, as well as to mentor and guide others.
  10. Strategic Decision-Making: If you enjoy thinking strategically and making decisions that impact an organization’s long-term goals, a board position can provide an outlet for your strategic thinking abilities.
  11. Visibility and Recognition: Serving on a board can raise your profile within the organization or community, leading to increased recognition and credibility.
  12. Challenging Yourself: Running for a board can be a way to challenge yourself, step out of your comfort zone, and take on new responsibilities.
  13. Love for La Jolla: This special place deserves special people to create future plans.  The more dedication you have to our “Jewel by the Sea, ” the more you’ll be inspired by fulfilling the LJVMA mission

Of course, being part of a board has time commitments.  LJVMA board members are expected to attend our monthly meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 4:00 pm.  They also can assist by volunteering at events, serving on committees, and reaching out to other merchants. The 60 – 90-minute meetings take place in person at the La Jolla Riford Library.  If you have the time, and commitment, being a board member can be rewarding and is great for building relationships.

Fill Out a Self Nomination Form to run for the LJVMA Board.  But hurry, the deadline to submit is September 8!

Record-breaking heat waves have become a staple of summers in America. Those hardest hit are the most vulnerable – seniors, young children and people with chronic health conditions. Extreme heat kills more people in the United States than any other weather hazard. Extreme heat events in the United States are expected to become even more common, more severe and longer lasting.

Here’s a list of tips to help stay cool and safe. Visit sdge.com/MyEnergy for more tips.

  1. Visit a Cool Zone which is a network of free, air-conditioned facilities across San Diego County like libraries and community centers. If you’re unable to get to a Cool Zone, call    2-1-1 to be connected to a transportation service at no cost. Visiting Cool Zones is also a way to use less energy at home and help reduce your energy costs. Find a Cool Zone near you at com/Cool-Zones or bit.ly/43EdfKw. Cool Zoone
  2. Learn about the Cool Zone Fan Program and find out if you qualify for a free fan at ly/CoolZoneFans.
  3. Catch a movie in an air-conditioned theatre during hot afternoons. Ticket prices are usually less expensive earlier in the day too.
  4. Don’t forget about your pets. When outdoors, carry water for your fur baby, try to stay in the shade and keep their paws off hot asphalt and other hot surfaces. Never leave an animal in a hot vehicle. At home, put ice cubes in your pet’s water bowl and place a cool, damp towel down for them to lay on.
  5. Keep your home’s shades, curtains and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day to help keep the sun’s rays out.
  6. Your stove and oven can give off a lot of heat so make meals that don’t require heat, like salads and sandwiches.
  7. When temperatures cool in the evening, open windows to let the cooler air in.
  8. Run your ceiling fan counter-clockwise so it pushes cooler air down. Reverse your ceiling fan direction in the winter for the opposite effect.
  9. If you have a window air conditioning unit, seal any cracks. If you have central A/C, check the ducts for proper insulation and clean filters regularly.
  10. Shift your energy use outside of 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. to save. Energy costs are the highest during this time. Do your heat-generating chores like laundry or running the dishwasher before 4 p.m. or after 9 p.m.

Tis the season for media coverage in La Jolla.  Besides the wonderful segments produced by CBS8 highlighting La Jolla First Friday Art Walk in June, LJVMA Executive Director was interviewed by Ron Jones, Voice of La Jolla, and co-founder of La Jolla Insiders.  Along with partner, Michael Mazaika, Ron has been actively involved in the La Jolla community for over 40 years.

La Jolla Insiders is a media platform that offers businesses and organizations a chance to tell their story in a personal and authentic way. The team at La Jolla Insiders has a unique ability to “pull back the curtain for guests and visitors and reveal the exciting features of our ever-evolving community.”  They explain that La Jolla Insiders are locals (not paid agents living elsewhere) who proudly share the deep knowledge of everything that La Jolla has to offer as only a team of long-time La Jollans can. In addition to knowing where to go and what to see, we’re able to share a deeper understanding of La Jolla’s history and traditions, helping you to add a deeper meaning to your La Jolla experience.”

Long-format interviews, such as the one with Jodi Rudick are one way La Jolla Insiders get up close and personal with La Jolla’s community leaders.

With the help of La Jolla’s community groups including the Sierra Club Seal Society, La Jolla Village has a brand new, colorful map featuring its most popular attractions from cultural and performing arts venues to trailheads and parks.  Of course, the map includes the best places to catch a look at seals and sea lions along with restrooms and lifeguard towers.  Visitors will be able to use the map to navigate to the most concentrated areas for shopping and dining as well.  So often merchants are asked questions like, “Where’s the restroom?”

Maps will be strategically placed throughout the village in A-Frames sign-holders.

La Jolla Village Merchants Association in partnership with AccessiBe is proud to offer FREE online training to help small businesses understand the need to add ADA-accessible functions to their websites. Making a website accessible is not only the law, but it is also good for business.

ADA accessibility, which refers to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), is important for websites because it ensures that people with disabilities can access and use websites effectively. The ADA, a federal law in the United States, prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in various areas, including employment, education, and public accommodations. The law requires that businesses and organizations provide “reasonable accommodations” for people with disabilities, including making their websites accessible.

There are many different types of disabilities that can affect a person’s ability to use a website, including visual impairments, hearing impairments, mobility impairments, and cognitive impairments. Websites that are not designed with accessibility in mind can create significant barriers for people with these disabilities, preventing them from being able to navigate the site, read its content, or interact with its features.

Making a website accessible involves a range of design and technical considerations, such as providing alternative text for images, ensuring that the site can be navigated using a keyboard, and providing captions or transcripts for audio and video content. By implementing these and other accessibility features, website owners can ensure that their site is usable by the widest possible audience, including people with disabilities. This not only helps to fulfill their legal obligations under the ADA, but also serves as an important step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible online environment for all users.
