In 1913, the City of San Diego purchased a lot for $1,000, marking the inception of Fire Station #13. The original one-story wood frame structure became the city’s first ‘City Hall,’ housing the Fire Department, Police Department, jail, hospital room, and the City Water Department. Architect Harold Abrams designed the building in a Spanish Mission revival style as part of the Works Progress Administration program. In 1937, the present fire station was constructed on adjacent lots, solidifying its role as La Jolla’s civic hub. After serving as a multi-functional municipal center, the fire and police stations relocated in 1976, leading to the building’s temporary use by City Lifeguards for a decade. Following that, the Library Department utilized it for storage during branch renovations.

In 1985, the city sought proposals for public use, with the La Jolla YMCA granted a 25-year lease in 1987. Renovations transformed the interior, and in December 1988, the building opened as a Teen/Senior Community Center. Over the years, it evolved to cater to different community needs, such as an Active Older Adults center in the 90s, a performing arts center in the early 2000s, and later a gymnastics program center. After a $1.2 million renovation in 2015, the Shepherd YMCA Firehouse reopened as a membership and health & fitness center while preserving its historical designation. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a three-year closure from 2020 to 2023 and served as a virtual studio to stream and record live fitness classes. Now, in 2024, the Shepherd YMCA Firehouse is re-opening to the public as a community space, continuing its legacy in La Jolla.

From December 15 to mid-May each year, California Harbor Seals can rest, give birth and nurture their newborn without interference from humans at La Jolla’s Children’s Pool.

La Jolla Village’s shoreline is home to California harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus). Although both species are pinnipeds (fin-footed mammals) found along the California coast, there are distinct differences between the two:

  • California sea lions are larger than harbor seals. Adult male California sea lions can weigh up to 800 pounds and reach lengths of up to 8 feet, while adult male harbor seals typically weigh between 150-200 pounds and are around 6 feet in length.
  • California sea lions have visible ear flaps, while harbor seals have small ear holes without external flaps.
  • California sea lions are more social and gregarious than harbor seals, often gathering in large groups on beaches or rocky shorelines. Harbor seals are more solitary and tend to haul out (rest on land) in smaller groups or alone.
  • California sea lions can move on land more easily than harbor seals, thanks to their longer and stronger front flippers. Harbor seals move more awkwardly on land and are better adapted to swimming and diving.
  • While both species feed on fish and squid, their diets differ somewhat. California sea lions are known for their ability to catch larger prey, such as salmon and herring, while harbor seals typically feed on smaller fish and invertebrates.

Despite their differences, both species are important components of California’s coastal ecosystem.

La Jolla Tide Pools are a series of natural pools filled with seawater that are located along the rocky coastline of La Jolla, California. These tide pools are home to a variety of marine life, including sea anemones, crabs, small fish, and other invertebrates.

The tide pools are formed during low tide when the water recedes and leaves behind small pools of water. Visitors can explore these pools and observe the marine life up close. It is important to note that the tide pools are fragile ecosystems and visitors should exercise caution to avoid damaging them. It is recommended that visitors stay on the rocks and avoid walking in the pools.

To access the tide pools, visitors can park at the La Jolla Cove parking lot and take a short walk south along the coast to the pools. The best time to visit the tide pools is during low tide, which occurs twice daily. Tide pool exploration is a popular activity for families and visitors of all ages.

It is important to note that tide pool ecosystems are protected, and visitors should not remove or disturb any animals or plants from the tide pools. Visitors are also advised to be mindful of the ocean and the changing tides, as the water can rise quickly and unexpectedly.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrates the patron Saint of Ireland who was born in the late 4th Century and died on March 17. The holiday has been observed in Ireland for over a thousand years, and it has become a global celebration of Irish heritage and culture. In Ireland, the day is a public holiday and is celebrated with parades, festivals, and other events. In other parts of the world, people also celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day by wearing green clothing, decorating with shamrocks, and attending parades and other cultural events.

Here are a few places to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in La Jolla Village.

  • Hennessey’s

  • St. Patrick’s Day – March 17th
  • World Poetry Day – March 21st
  • International Day of Happiness – March 20th
  • World Water Day – March 22nd

  2. Tennis: BNP Paribas Open – One of the largest tennis tournaments outside of the Grand Slams, the BNP Paribas Open is held annually in Indian Wells, California in March.

How Lucky are You?  It’s Seal Pupping Season in La Jolla!  There is nothing more adorable than taking a stroll along the La Jolla during Pacific Harbor Seal pupping season.  Not many people are able get an up close and personal look at some of our youngest pinniped residents in their natural habitat – newborn seal pups and their moms in full cuddle mode. While visitors are not allowed on the beach during popping season, walking the seawalls allows incredible views of adorable seal pups and their mothers.

Moms and young pups play, swim, surf, and rest together on the protected beach through May 15 at which time humans are again allowed access. No one should miss this rare opportunity to witness nature in its most loving and memorable form.

You’re Invited to Free Talks and Tours Hosted by Sierra Club Seal Society Every Saturday in March

Every Saturday through April 1 all are invited to join Sierra Club Seal Society’s knowledgeable docents for a fun-filled talk and short walk to learn about the local marine mammal pinnipeds here in La Jolla. You’ll learn about the distinct lifestyle, biology and habits between harbor seals and sea lions. Then you’ll go for a short walk to see both the harbor seal moms and pups at Children’s Pool, followed by a look at the noisy social behaviors of the sea lions at Point La Jolla.
Dates: March 4, 11, 18, 25, and April 1 at 2:00 PM
Where: Mangelsen – Images of Nature Gallery | 7916 Girard Avenue, La Jolla

Reservations are NOT required.
For more information call (619) 479-3412 or (858) 551-9553.
