Votes must be received by 12 noon Wednesday; October 18th and you must be a property owner or representative of the property owner (proxy) within the district. The district boundaries can be viewed HERE.

Candidates running reflect the property owners within the La Jolla Maintenance Assessment District and Members at Large who have the experience and expertise to manage the organization’s business. Candidates have met the following requirements: Representative of the La Jolla Community Foundation, Property Owner-Non-Profit, Community Member-at-Large, Property Owner-Residential. Board members are asked to attend 4 public board meetings annually, serve on committees, and comply with the California Brown Act in decision-making.

Our current Board President, Ed Witt notes, “This is a great way to have a say in maintaining the public spaces in the Village. We need diverse voices and skill sets on our board to ensure we are meeting the expectations of the property owners and the needs of our community.”

The election of candidates will be announced at the Enhance La Jolla Board meeting to be held Thursday, October 19th at 4 PM at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego located at 700 Prospect St. La Jolla, CA 92037.

I spoke to the owner of Twig and Twill, Laura Parks to learn a little more about the boutique.

Twig and Twill Boutique is an amazing local, woman owned business that is new to La Jolla. La Jolla is known for many things, beautiful beaches, fancy cars, and great hotels. But, there is one business that has become part of the community that also makes La Jolla stand out from the rest of San Diego, Yidddishland! Yiddishland of La Jolla is a new addition to the community and is the only non-profit in San Diego that promotes the Yiddish language and culture. I had the pleasure of talking to the founder of Yiddishland, Jana Mazurkiewicz Meisarosh to learn more about this amazing organization! 

Yiddishland opened in La Jolla this November. Yiddish is one of the three major literary languages of Jewish history and Yiddishland’s mission is to expand awareness of the beauty and joy of Yiddishkeit and preserve and advance the Yiddish language and culture within the US and worldwide. Their services include hosting cultural events, Yiddish translation services, Yiddish, Hebrew, or Polish classes, and art exhibitions and sales. They have an amazing team of people that are willing to share their knowledge of the Yiddish language with everyone and anyone who stops by wanting to learn more about the culture. Jana herself, who is originally from Poland, is a PhD candidate that is working on her dissertation on Yiddish Theater in Communist Warsaw. She is also an actor, director, playwright and producer of Yiddish theater. Jana is sharing all her knowledge about the Yiddish language and culture with La Jolla through the events and classes offered at Yiddishland! 

What future events is Yiddishland planning? They plan on celebrating Hanukkah during the First Friday Art Walk on 3 December from 4-7pm. They will host a Hanukkah candle lighting as well as have special Hanukkah-themed snacks, music and art! So, if you want to participate in the celebration or are just curious and want to learn a little more while you explore the Art Walk stop by Yiddishland at 1128 Wall Street to check out their booth!

And if you decide you want to try and learn a new language, Yiddishland is beginning new Yiddish, Polish and Hebrew classes in January. They are also holding Yiddish classes via Zoom starting on 6 December. If you are interested in any of these programs you can visit their website at yiddishlandcalifornia.org to register!

A new addition to the La Jolla community, Yiddishland collaborates with local artists and academics to continue to grow and become part of the community. So, if you are interested in learning something new or want to be a part of this organization or help them grow, stop by their location on Wall Street and talk with any of the volunteers there to learn more about how you can! So far, San Diego County will not face the same type of mandated closures as neighboring counties.

While San Diego County has mandated all restaurants to close by 10:00 PM this will not really impact La Jolla Village eateries. La Jolla is a seaside village not currently known for its “nightlife.” Rather, restaurants such as George’s at the Cove (pictured above with new adaptations keeping diners safe).  The number one reason people visit La Jolla is is coastal beauty and natural beauty. La Jolla Village restaurants wisely cater to these visitors making La Jolla a superb destination for breakfast, brunch, lunch, happy hour, and sunset dining.

Today (June 17, 2020) the U.S. Small Business Administration, in consultation with the Department of the Treasury, posted a revised, borrower-friendly Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan forgiveness application implementing the PPP Flexibility Act of 2020, signed into law by President Trump on June 5, 2020.  In addition to revising the full forgiveness application, SBA also published a new EZ version of the forgiveness application that applies to borrowers that:

• Are self-employed and have no employees; OR
• Did not reduce the salaries or wages of their employees by more than 25%, and did not reduce the number or hours of their employees; OR
• Experienced reductions in business activity as a result of health directives related to COVID-19, and did not reduce the salaries or wages of their employees by more than 25%.

The EZ application requires fewer calculations and less documentation for eligible borrowers.  Details regarding the applicability of these provisions are available in the instructions to the new EZ application form.

Both applications give borrowers the option of using the original 8-week covered period (if their loan was made before June 5, 2020) or an extended 24-week covered period.  These changes will result in a more efficient process and make it easier for businesses to realize full forgiveness of their PPP loan.

Volunteer attorneys will provide remote consultations to eligible businesses and nonprofit organizations on legal issues arising out of the pandemic, including questions relating to employment law, commercial leases, insurance, contracts, bankruptcy/restructuring, applications for financial assistance, and more. Consultations will last up to 45 minutes and are provided free of charge.
