Out of the nearly 29 million tourists that visit San Diego each year, a significant portion are attracted by the seaside village of La Jolla. Dubbed “The Jewel of San Diego,” this coastline community has a cove that has been included in multiple top 10 rankings of the most beautiful beaches in the country. As such, it’s essential to preserve its charms, whether you’re a local or a tourist.

Sustainability is one of the ways the community of La Jolla is taking care to do exactly this. Through eco-friendly efforts, La Jolla can continue being a shining gem for San Diego. That said, these initiatives hinge not only on the locals but also on every visitor who enjoys La Jolla. If you plan on visiting La Jolla soon, here are some tips on contributing and having a sustainable travel experience.

Support eco-friendly restaurants

No trip is complete without sampling local delicacies, and La Jolla is especially rich in fresh food. Its proximity to the ocean offers multiple sources of sustainably sourced seafood, and it also has a number of thriving farmers’ markets where eco-friendly restaurants procure their organic ingredients. There are a lot of vegan and plant-based cafes around the area as well. There are many options for eco-friendly eateries in La Jolla, especially now that San Diego has imposed a statewide ban on all single-use styrofoam food containers in an effort to reduce litter. Some restaurants, like La Jolla’s Burger Lounge, are even Green Restaurant Certified, meaning they’re devoted to serving good food and being environmentally friendly. You can also drop by eco-friendly places like Green Door Cafe and Olive and Basil to taste the best of what La Jolla has to offer.

Bring sustainable beach gear

With La Jolla Cove being world-renowned for its beauty, its imperative to take a dip in its refreshing waters when you visit. Make your beach trip to La Jolla perfect by bringing environmentally friendly equipment to keep you safe and ensure that you have a fun time. Protective eyewear, like sunglasses with UV protection, now comes in eco-friendly options made with recycled plastic bottles. You can find these collections from the brand Eyebuydirect, which is in partnership with organizations like Planet, which are dedicated to protecting the environment. You can also protect your skin by wearing ocean-friendly sunscreen that won’t be toxic to marine life. Products like the All Good SPF 50 Sun Butter are certified organic, and they donate a portion of their sales to support the United Plant Savers as well. Additionally, Everything But Water is a brand located in La Jolla that offers swimwear made out of organic cotton and upcycled nylon.

Shop at stores with Earth-centric initiatives

Make sure to commemorate your trip to La Jolla by purchasing some souvenirs from local boutiques. There are many shopping options in La Jolla, including local artisans and earth-friendly stores. You can find a selection of handmade clothing, high-quality accessories, and home goods made from sustainably sourced natural materials. Many of these establishments also give back to the community by donating to organizations dedicated to preserving La Jolla. If you’re in the area, visit shops like Aviator Nation, Vuori or Whiskey and Leather to experience the joys of a sustainable shopping spree. You can also find sustainable self-care products, like soap and body wash, from La Jolla-based line BRIXY. Their products are vegan, cruelty-free, and come in biodegradable packaging.

Familiarize yourself with local rules and regulations

Since La Jolla has an abundance of picturesque cliffs and caves, it’s also home to marine life, specifically groups of sea lions that stay by the shoreline. Flocks of tourists marvel at these magnificent creatures as they sunbathe, becoming another special kind of attraction at La Jolla. However, experts advise tourists to keep their distance and avoid disturbing the animals. This aligns with being eco-friendly, as it directly entails respecting nature and wildlife in their habitats. It’s fine to snap a pic or two but steer clear of disrupting any animals located at La Jolla Cove. If you want to contribute to La Jolla’s booming eco-tourism sector, you can also choose to stay at one of its eco-hotels, such as Orli La Jolla.

Travel with green transportation

San Diego is embracing sustainable transportation initiatives, and La Jolla is a very pedestrian-friendly place.  “Park Once, Linger Longer” is the perfect motto for La Jolla as its beaches, walking trails shopping and dineing are all within a few blocks of one another.  You can also reduce your ecological footprint using alternatives like electric bikes, golf cards, scooters and even segways to get around town.  Additionally, La Jolla’s cycling routes allow you to travel in an eco-friendly manner while enjoying the sights and sounds of the community around you.

As we celebrate the Ocean this month at First Friday Art Walk and as part of we look at what it means for a seafood restaurant to be sustainable, it means that the restaurant is operating with practices that promote the long-term health of our oceans, fisheries, and seafood supply chains. Specifically, a sustainable seafood restaurant adopts the following practices to ensure the long-term sustainability of seafood and the health of our oceans.

  1. Sources seafood responsibly: A sustainable seafood restaurant sources its seafood from sustainable fisheries, or from sources that have been certified by credible third-party organizations such as the Marine Stewardship Council or the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.
  2. Prioritizes locally sourced seafood: A sustainable seafood restaurant aims to source its seafood locally when possible to reduce the carbon footprint and support the local economy.
  3. Avoids serving endangered species: A sustainable seafood restaurant does not serve endangered species, and avoids serving seafood that is overfished or caught using harmful fishing methods such as bottom trawling or drift nets.
  4. Minimizes seafood waste: A sustainable seafood restaurant aims to minimize seafood waste by using every part of the fish and minimizing leftovers.
  5. Educates customers: A sustainable seafood restaurant educates its customers about sustainable seafood choices and the importance of responsible fishing practices.

La Jolla Village is proud to be home to some certified sustainable seafood restaurants including:

  1. Georges at the Cove

  2. Nine-Ten Restaurant and Bar

  3. Sushi Nekosan

  4. Lobster West

  5. El Pescador Fish Market

If your restaurant should be added to the list please email us at lajollavillagemerchants@gmail.com.

La Jolla Village Merchants Association in partnership with AccessiBe is proud to offer FREE online training to help small businesses understand the need to add ADA-accessible functions to their websites. Making a website accessible is not only the law, but it is also good for business.

ADA accessibility, which refers to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), is important for websites because it ensures that people with disabilities can access and use websites effectively. The ADA, a federal law in the United States, prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in various areas, including employment, education, and public accommodations. The law requires that businesses and organizations provide “reasonable accommodations” for people with disabilities, including making their websites accessible.

There are many different types of disabilities that can affect a person’s ability to use a website, including visual impairments, hearing impairments, mobility impairments, and cognitive impairments. Websites that are not designed with accessibility in mind can create significant barriers for people with these disabilities, preventing them from being able to navigate the site, read its content, or interact with its features.

Making a website accessible involves a range of design and technical considerations, such as providing alternative text for images, ensuring that the site can be navigated using a keyboard, and providing captions or transcripts for audio and video content. By implementing these and other accessibility features, website owners can ensure that their site is usable by the widest possible audience, including people with disabilities. This not only helps to fulfill their legal obligations under the ADA, but also serves as an important step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible online environment for all users.

Rady Children’s is teaming up with La Jolla Village Merchants in a highly publicized cause-marketing promotion aimed at both raising funds for Rady’s patients and program while driving businesses to La Jolla businesses.  From April 29th- May 7th all La Jolla Village businesses are invited to take part in Rady’s May Means Business Campaign in which Rady’s donors, staff, families, fans, and friends are encouraged to shop at participating La Jolla businesses.  In exchange, businesses creatively develop strategies to raise funds that will positively impact young patients, families, and healthcare heroes.

The Rady’s team will help your businesses come up with the best way to get involved and shine.

Here are just a few ideas:

Donation at Checkout with Icon
Prompt customers to donate at check-out and hang an icon with their name on the wall. Asking your customers if they can donate $1, $5 or round up their change at check-out adds up to a big impact.

Portion-of-Sale Promotion
Commit to donating a certain percentage of sales for a day or the whole week and promote this to your customers.

Rady Children’s Day
Choose a day where 100% of sales are donated to Rady Children’s Hospital.

Signature Product Promotion
Feature a signature May Means Business product or service, where all or a portion of each purchase of that signature item is donated to Rady Children’s.

Matching Gifts
Encourage your customers to donate to Rady Children’s and incentivize them by matching donations up to a certain amount. A matching gift plus social media promotion is a sure way to success.

Host an Event
Host an event where the proceeds are donated to Rady Children’s. Take it a step further and find sponsors for your event to raise even more for the kids!

We look forward to working with you directly to build a cause-marketing promotion that fits the needs and goals of your business.  Below are a few cause-marketing ideas for the week, but Rady Children’s is happy to work with each business to build their own unique opportunity.  Contact Jessica Flora at jflora@rchsd.org to plan your promotion or learn more.

La Jolla Village Merchants Association in partnership with AccessiBe is proud to offer FREE online training on Wednesday, February 22 at 1:00 PM and Thursday, February 23 at 9:00 AM to help small businesses understand the need to add ADA-accessible functions to their websites. Making a website accessible is not only the law, but it is also good for business.

ADA accessibility, which refers to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), is important for websites because it ensures that people with disabilities can access and use websites effectively. By implementing these and other accessibility features, website owners can ensure that their site is usable by the widest possible audience, including people with disabilities. This not only helps to fulfill their legal obligations under the ADA, but also serves as an important step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible online environment for all users.

In 2020, La Jolla Village Merchants Association developed a Diversity Task Force that developed strategies to build a more diverse organization.  Goals were set to recruit board and committee members, volunteers and interns who represent various backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.  Efforts have been made to add inclusive language and images to LJVMA’s marketing and promotions.  Further, the LJVMA website has incorporated ADA accessibility tools throughout the site allowing a positive experience for all users.  In addition, board members and staff are now required to attend DEI training each year as well as training focused on ethics and open meeting rules.

This year, on March 8, immediately following the monthly board meeting; the LJVMA board will participate in a very special workshop developed by the National Conflict Resolution Center, a gold standard in professional development.  Thanks to the Empress Hotel for donating their beautiful Garden Patio and Piazza 1909 for donating a pasta dinner for our attendees.

There are several reasons why attending diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training is important:

  1. Increased awareness: DEI training helps individuals develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. This increased awareness can help create a more inclusive and respectful work environment.
  2. Improved communication: Effective communication is critical to any organization’s success. DEI training can help individuals learn to communicate more effectively across differences, reducing misunderstandings and conflicts.
  3. Enhanced creativity and innovation: A diverse and inclusive workplace can help promote creativity and innovation, as individuals from different backgrounds and with different experiences bring unique perspectives and ideas to the table.
  4. Increased employee engagement and retention: When employees feel valued and respected, they are more likely to be engaged and committed to their work. DEI training can help foster a sense of belonging and encourage employee retention.
  5. Legal compliance: Many organizations are required by law to provide DEI training to their employees, particularly in areas related to preventing harassment and discrimination.

Overall, attending DEI training can help organizations build a more inclusive and respectful workplace, while also promoting individual growth and development.

There are a few spaces available for members to attend our March 8 workshop.  If you are interested in attending, please click HERE.

Holiday decor, festive lights, and music have been adding to the ambiance of La Jolla Village since before Thanksgiving.  However, some merchants embrace the holiday spirit in a big way with imaginative window tableaus that rise above the rest.  This year a team of four judges walked the entire Village of La Jolla in search of the most creative, engaging, and spirited decor.  The job was made extra challenging due to the many businesses, shops, and restaurants that decked the halls and so much more.

This year the honor of Best Dressed Window goes to Adelaide’s and its team of talented designers. Coming in as runner-up is Copy Cove which turned on the holiday charm with its fantastic light display. Honorable mention goes to Bower’s Jewelry, Floral Palette, Ralph Lauren,  Ark Antiques, Sigi’s, Sugar & Scribe and We Olive.

Thanks to our judges interior designer Maddie Lord; retired retail executive, Bill Podway; art gallery director, Katey Kalanges; and Artist Klara Chavarria for their time and expertise.  Of course, a special thanks to all of our businesses who went over and above to bring cheer and joy to the village in 2022.

It’s not too late to choose your favorite as most decor will remain in place until New Year’s Day.

I hope your summer has been super successful.  The village and hotels have been busy as ever and we know that means good things for our restaurant community.

We have some exciting things happening that are specific to La Jolla Village Restaurants including a brand new app developed exclusively for LJVMA to help visitors discover all of the incredible food choices in the village (we are now up to over 110 restaurants in our little village and we want you ALL to thrive!) The app developer has asked you ALL to complete a survey to understand better how third-party apps are impacting your business (yelp, door dash, uber eats, open table, etc.)

The app we are introducing is no cost and no commission to you or your guests.  You will not need to add content to the platform as information will be curated directly from your website.  The app is designed to help visitors navigate the many food and drink options upon arriving at the Village.  We are very lucky to have been chosen for the launch and rely on our restaurant community to offer some feedback.  YOU ARE THE EXPERTS. We will host a short Zoom meeting on Wednesday, 14 to tell you more and demo the app.

Click HERE to sign up for the La Jolla Village Restuarant Zoom meeting

We also have some information about Taste of La Jolla which is a fantastic way for all restaurants to build a local, loyal fan base.  Join us to meet other restauranteurs and to stay in the know!

La Jolla Village Restaurants are invited to take part in the first major event of the La Jolla High School Foundation since COVID!

Participating restaurants will supply a food or beverage “taster” for approximately 150 – 200 guests in exchange for major promotion and publicity to all families in the La Jolla schools — which includes nearly 3,500 students. Promotion will be through various channels including school-sponsored emails, social media, the La Jolla Light, and through LJVMA

What’s in it for YOU?

  • Build your local customer base. These are La Jolla LOCALS.- so it’s a great opportunity to attract local families back to the village restaurants.
  • Stand Out from the Rest – The number of restaurants will be limited in order to allow participants to reach every site.
  • Direct Promotion Opportunity – All participating restaurants are encouraged to give a “bounceback offer’ to attendees. Feel free to have this available with your tasters.
  • Boost bar sales – Historically restaurants experienced a major spike in bar sales as attendees congregated at participating merchants.
  • Warm, fuzzy feeling – -It’s charity!! Feel great about supporting underfunded programs at LJHS.

Restaurants wishing to be included in the event can click HERE

Please note: The number of restaurants is limited in order to insure the best experience for all!

About the Board of Directors – It’s Election Season! Apply to Join Our Board by September 8.

Each year the election timeline begins in September with a call for Self Nomination Forms.  Elections are held in October each year at our Annual Meeting.  Self Nominations can be submitted year-round for consideration if board seats are vacated.  This year Self Nomination forms are due by Friday, September 8.

The La Jolla Village Merchants Association is guided by a 15-person Board of Directors that sets policies and strategies, under the guidelines set forth by the City of San Diego’s Economic Development Department Operation Manual. La Jolla Village Merchant’s Association is excited to relaunch its popular peer-to-peer Block Captain program. Anyone can be a Block Captain —  even people who do not have a business in La Jolla Village.  We are looking for people who are friendly and helpful and want to get to know their neighboring merchants.   The goal is to help busy merchants stay on top and connected to La Jolla Village activities by assigning them an ambassador to help answer questions, deliver information, share news, and explain resources.

Captains Wanted! We are looking for approximately 24 people to take on the Block Captain role throughout La Jolla Village. Each Block Captain will be assigned a small, convenient “zone” that will include about 50 merchants (retail, restaurants, offices – even churches and non-profits.)

Block Captain FAQs

  1. Who can be a Block Captain? Anyone with a connection to La Jolla Village can be a block captain! This is an especially great opportunity for restaurants, retailers, community members, those new to town, retired business people, and sales/marketing people to build relationships.
  2. How will I know what businesses are in my zone? Zone Captains will be given an initial list of the businesses located in their assigned “Zone” including basic information: Business name, contacts phone number, address, type of business, number of employees, etc. It’s a great way to learn about your neighbors, too!
What will I say when I talk to businesses in my zone? Whether you are a La Jolla Village Expert or a newbie – we’ll provide you with the training and information you’ll need to feel confident and smart! Our website is comprehensive and we’re developing digital and physical promotional tools for you to share.
  3. What type of time commitment is expected of Block Captains? Initially, it may take a few hours each month to introduce yourself to your Zone. As time goes on and people get to know you may move a little faster (or slower) depending upon your personality.
  4. How will we keep this fresh and exciting? There’s so much happening in the Village it can feel a little overwhelming at times! To keep things coordinated and consistent, we’ll create one or two talking points each month for Block Captains to share ranging from Storefront Improvement Grants to upcoming events. We’ll gather the info, share it with Block Captains, who share it with businesses.  Block Captains do this at a time that works for them!
  5. How long will I be a Block Captain? This is up to you! We hope BCs will “own their zone” for at least 6 months to a year but also understand that many businesses are seasonal making it difficult to commit long term. Ultimately, as the program grows, each Block Captain might recruit an “alternate” or co-captain to assist and can pinch-hit in your absence.
  6. Is all of this set in stone? Heck, no! We’re just getting started. This is a work in progress so jump on board and help us progress! We are in brainstorming mode; all ideas and suggestions are welcome!
  7. How can I learn more? Click here to register for an online information session via ZOOM.  The first one is scheduled for September 13 at 9:30 AM.  If you are unable to make the meeting we’ll send you the recorded meeting and a follow-up email. We’ll get in touch individually to answer any questions you may have.

La Jolla Mutt Strut is a pet-friendly event for all dog lovers in town. It is presented by the Foundation of La Jolla High School. It is kicked off with a 1-mile dog walk on Draper from La Jolla High to the Rec Center. And there is a party for dogs and their owners immediately following at the La Jolla Rec Center. There is a pet psychic lined up, paw-dicures with nail pawlish, dog trick class, dog yoga, and lots of pet contests! Ron Jones with Voice of La Jolla is an official Emcee of the party.

The Foundation of La Jolla High is hoping that all La Jolla businesses and residents to get involved!

  1. 20-day Challengewww.ljmuttstrut.com/20-day-challenge.  The Foundation is giving a $200 gift certificate to a La Jolla business that accumulates the highest number of points. La Jolla residents nominate any business of their choice and earn points to win the $200 gift certificate. To earn points, the participants tag the business they nominate and @ljmuttstrut, so we both are getting promoted on everyone’s social media accounts. Which is awesome, right? And the winner business will receive the $200 cash from the Foundation to issue a $200 gift card to a randomly picked winner from the list of people who nominated the business.
  2. Pet contests. We are calling all businesses who would be able to donate prizes for contests and/or goodie bags. Does anyone have samples? Coupons? Flyers with any promotional services/ideas? And of course, one can always sponsor the event, and the Foundation will promote all the sponsors in return as much as possible.

The event has already gotten to 50% capacity in registrations. This is gonna be a great annual community event. We’d love everyone in the community to be a part of it big or small!  www.ljmuttstrut.com

Our goal is to get the whole community involved. It takes a village to raise kids, support each other, and promote our community across the globe. And animals always make things better, no matter what you do. So either way, we are looking forward to seeing everyone at the event on May 7!

Please reach out to the fundraiser chair Olga Wharton at olgawharton@gmail.com or 214-235-5301 to discuss more win-win opportunities.

La Jolla Village Merchants Association has elected long-time resident and luxury real estate professional Amber Anderson to serve as the 2021-2022 Board of Directors President.

With a mission to bring business to La Jolla Village, the La Jolla Village Merchants Association (LJVMA) was created to support businesses in the area, providing valuable resources to both the community and business owners, while unifying all businesses to work toward a common goal, creating a thriving Village community.

Previously serving as Treasurer for the organization, as well as having been the Chair of the Young Professionals Network (YPN), and Realtor of the Year for the San Diego Association of Realtors; Amber is no stranger to the community and has been an active participant for numerous years.  Her extensive experience and expertise in building meaningful relationships with the community and businesses will truly create a positive impact for all LJVMA members. Amber’s goal is to make an impact on the business owners and the people that call La Jolla home. The new officers make up the first all-female executive board in LJVMA’s history.

“My family lives and works here, my kids attend school here, and my office is located right in the heart of the Village, and so I really have a vested interest in continuing to keep La Jolla such an amazing place”, states Amber.

Belonging and contributing to numerous charitable organizations, including The San Diego Symphony Notables, St. Germaine Children’s Charity, Promises to Kids, and The Birdrock Elementary Foundation, Amber’s continued involvement in the community is based on her passion for creating a better community.

In fact, Amber has even created a video series called “Keeping it Local,” a series of videos highlighting different businesses throughout the La Jolla community. “I truly want to do whatever I can to support and bring business to La Jolla and am excited for this new role as President for the La Jolla Village Merchant Association. It’s an honor to give back to this community and watch it flourish and continue to grow,” states Amber.
